An Isle of Man flagged vessel and its crew have been awarded for bravery at sea by the International Maritime Organization.
Captain Christopher Phillips and the crew of LNG tanker British Achiever have received a prestigious commendation from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The awarding of IMO Honours for Exceptional Bravery at sea was made at the organisation’s 134th Council session last month, during which a special recognition was made for merchant vessels and crew involved in the rescue of mixed migrants at sea.
In December 2024, British Achiever was sent to assist 89 people in distress in the Mediterranean Sea 28 nautical miles off the Greek island of Gavdos. During the IMO session, Captain Phillips and his crew were praised for their display of bravery, professionalism and compassion.
The IMO Honours are awarded annually to provide international recognition for those who risk their own lives to save others. The award acknowledged the ‘bravery, professionalism and compassion’ of Captain Phillips and his crew.
Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry, Cameron Mitchell said: “The Isle of Man Ship Registry team and I would like congratulate Captain Phillips and the entire team onboard the British Achiever for being awarded the IMO Honours for Exceptional Bravery at sea.
“Their actions upheld the finest of maritime traditions by risking their own lives to save others. The 89 lives saved are testament to the professionalism and compassion of the entire team. Thank you one and all.”
Lambros Klaoudatos, Senior Vice President at bp shipping, said: “We are incredibly proud of Captain Phillips and the entire team onboard British Achiever for their courageous actions. Their professionalism, compassion, and swift response reflect the very best of bp’s values and our commitment to safety - both at sea and in the communities we serve.”
Awardees are invited to receive their awards in person at this year’s IMO Awards Ceremony, held in London on Monday 24 November.
