New Ascension Island search and rescue vessel enters service

Ascension Guardian

A new search and rescue vessel has been launched to support vital lifesaving work at the British Overseas Territory Ascension Island.

Funded by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ascension Guardian is a cutting-edge vessel that underpins the work of Ascension Island Government’s Sea and Land Rescue Service.

The new vessel arrived at the British Overseas Territory on 29 March and replaces the service’s 22-year-old Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB), Ocean Sprinter.

The vessel boasts advanced vessel design, performance and technology, aiding the operational capabilities of the service while enhancing the safety of its personnel, who are volunteers drawn from across the island.

Inaugural sea trials and crew familiarisation were completed in April, and the vessel was formally blessed on 17 May. Ascension Guardian is now ready to be tasked for search and rescue activities across Ascension Island’s 40 km of coastline.

Simon Minshull, Administrator for Ascension Island, said:

“I want to extend our sincere thanks to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for their generous support in funding this vessel, as well as the expansion of Ascension’s Sea Rescue facilities and other maritime safety improvements and training."

"The arrival of the Ascension Guardian marks a new era for the Ascension Island Government’s Sea and Land Rescue Service - enhancing safety, capability, and our commitment to protecting lives at sea. With cutting-edge technology and the dedication of our rescue team volunteers, this vessel stands as a symbol of vigilance and service to the community of Ascension Island.”

He added: “UK Government investment in Ascension’s maritime capability strengthens the very fabric of our community and ensures we have the resources to respond effectively when it matters most.”

Phil Bostock, Operational Lead of the MCA's Overseas Territories Search and Rescue Capability Project, said: “Ascension Guardian is a purpose-built search and rescue vessel that will enable the Sea and Land Rescue Service to safely and effectively respond to maritime search and rescue incidents around the island.

“Crewed by dedicated volunteers, the new vessel will significantly enhance the island’s response capabilities and provide continuity of service for many years.”
